Why Every Yoga Teacher Should Learn Adjustments: The Basics That Bring Real Improvement in Students

Namaste, dear yogis and future teachers.

When we embark on our yoga journey, our focus is primarily on our own asana, breath, and sadhana. However, the moment you stand in front of a class as a teacher, everything shifts. It’s no longer just about you; it’s about the student on the mat, trusting you completely, waiting for your guidance to explore their body more deeply and safely.

This is where adjustments come into play. At BinduSar Yoga, a Yoga Teacher Training School located in Tapovan, Rishikesh, we emphasize that adjustment is not an "extra" skill to be acquired later. Instead, it is one of the fundamental aspects of becoming a proficient yoga teacher. It is a core component of every Yoga Teacher Training Course (TTC) we offer in Rishikesh.

What Do We Actually Mean by Adjustment?

Many students mistakenly believe that adjustment means pushing the body harder into a pose. This understanding is incorrect. True adjustment is both an art and a science. It involves using the right words, gentle touch, and sometimes props to help students find better alignment and awareness. Good adjustment never forces the body. It first listens to the body and then guides it.

The Three Types of Adjustments Every Teacher Must Learn

  • Verbal Adjustment: Guiding through words and cues only, without any physical touch.

  • Tactile (Hands-On) Adjustment: Using physical touch to correct alignment or enhance awareness.

  • Prop-Based Adjustment: Utilizing blocks, straps, bolsters, or wall support to help students achieve safe alignment.

Why Adjustment Is a Foundation, Not a Later-Stage Skill

Many new teachers perceive adjustment as an "advanced" skill, something to learn only after gaining years of experience. However, based on our training of over 1,600 teachers from around the globe at our Yoga School in Rishikesh, this perspective is entirely misguided. Adjustment is not an embellishment on top of teaching; it is a fundamental tool, just like sequencing or breath instruction. We teach it from Day One in our 200-hour and 300-hour Yoga TTC in Rishikesh.

Understanding the Importance of Adjustment

  1. Building Trust Between Teacher and Student

When a teacher places a caring, confident hand on a student's shoulder or hip to assist with alignment, a shift occurs in the room. The student feels that someone is genuinely watching over their body, not just issuing instructions from the front. This trust is the seed from which a long-term, dedicated student grows.

  2. Preventing Injury Before It Happens

A student misaligning their knee in Virabhadrasana II or collapsing their lower back in Urdhva Mukha Svanasana may not even realize their mistake. Without timely correction from the teacher, these patterns can repeat class after class, leading to injuries. A teacher trained in adjustment can catch these patterns immediately.

  3. Visible Improvement in the Student

This aspect of learning adjustment is truly beautiful. When a student who has struggled to straighten their leg in Trikonasana suddenly feels, through your hands, what a fully straight leg feels like, their understanding expands in a way that words alone cannot achieve. The body learns through experience. Improvement that might take months of solo practice can occur in a single, well-executed adjustment.

  4. Deepening the Teacher's Understanding of Anatomy

You cannot adjust what you do not understand. Learning adjustment compels a teacher to study anatomy, not just from textbooks but through the diverse bodies in the room. This includes tight hamstrings, hypermobile shoulders, old injuries, and different bone structures. Such knowledge makes you a stronger teacher in every aspect of your practice.

  5. Separating a Confident Teacher from a Hesitant One

Students can sense hesitation immediately, even without verbal cues. A teacher unsure of how or where to touch, or who avoids adjustment out of fear, often struggles to maintain authority in the room. Proper training eliminates this fear, replacing it with clear, safe, and confident techniques.

How We Teach Adjustments at Our Yoga TTC in Rishikesh

In our 200-hour and 300-hour Hatha Vinyasa and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training Courses in Tapovan, Rishikesh, adjustment training is integrated into daily practice. It is not taught as a one-off workshop and then forgotten. Our trainees practice adjusting each other under close guidance, pose by pose, until the touch becomes intuitive rather than mechanical.

As with all our teaching, we root this training in a deeper understanding. We incorporate not only Western anatomy but also the wisdom of Patañjali's Yoga Sutras and the subtler energetic body described in Kundalini Tantra of the Bihar School. This comprehensive approach is one reason students travel from all over the world to study with us in Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world, rather than learning adjustments from a video alone. An adjustment given with awareness becomes more than just a physical correction; it transforms into a genuine moment of connection between two souls on the same path.

The Journey of Becoming a Teacher

Becoming a yoga teacher is a profound journey. It requires dedication, patience, and a willingness to learn. As you prepare for this path, remember that every adjustment you make is an opportunity to enhance your students' experience.

Embracing the Art of Adjustment

Adjustment is not merely a technique; it is an art form. Each touch conveys your intention and care. It is about creating a safe space for your students to explore their bodies. When you master this skill, you empower your students to deepen their practice.

Final Thoughts

If you are preparing to become a yoga teacher, please do not treat adjustment as something for later. It is as fundamental as knowing your Surya Namaskar. Often, it is the very element that determines whether your students feel truly transformed in your class or simply instructed.

A teacher who has mastered the art of adjustment does not just teach yoga poses. They change how a student experiences their own body, one safe and caring touch at a time.

The journey of becoming a skilled yoga teacher is both rewarding and challenging. Embrace the learning process, and remember that every adjustment is a step toward creating a more profound connection with your students.
