Important: This course is not recommended for complete beginners. Participants must have prior experience with Ashtanga Yoga and should be able to comfortably practice at least Half Primary Series (led or Mysore-style).

Module 1: Introduction to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga  

- History and Philosophy: Understand the origins of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, its foundational philosophy, and its connection to the lineage of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.  

- Eight Limbs of Yoga: Explore the principles of the eight limbs as outlined by Patanjali, emphasising their application within Ashtanga practice.

 

Module 2: Comprehensive Asana Practice  

Dive deep into the heart of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga with this module focusing on the Primary Series and its intricacies.

 

- Primary Series Breakdown: This section provides a detailed study of the Ashtanga Primary Series, known as Yoga Chikitsa (Yoga Therapy), designed to detoxify and align the body. Each asana will be taught through a lens of alignment, breath, and intention.

 

- Asana Details: Participants will practice key postures, including:

  - Surya Namaskara A & B (Sun Salutations): Learn to integrate breath and movement through the foundational sun salutations, which warm up the body and prepare for further practice.

  - Standing Postures: Focus on postures such as Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle Pose), and Virabhadrasana I & II (Warrior I & II) to develop strength, balance, and flexibility.

  - Seated Postures: Master the techniques of sitting postures like Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend) and Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose), highlighting the stationary focus and deepening of breath.

  - Inversions and Finishing Postures: Explore inversions such as Sirsasana (Headstand) and Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), emphasizing their psychological and physiological benefits in building confidence and grounding energy.

 

- Alignment and Adjustments: Intensive training on alignment techniques to ensure safe practices:

  - Understanding Lineage and Key Adjustments: Learn the significance of each posture within the series, including how to make effective adjustments to support students physically and mentally.

  - Safe Adjustments: Employ hands-on adjustments and verbal cues, ensuring that each student fosters their practice safely, regardless of their experience level.

 

- Breathing and Movement Integration: The essence of Ashtanga lies in the synchronization of breath with movement (Vinyasa).

  - Drishti (Gaze Point): Instruction on how to utilize gaze points to help focus and deepen concentration, enhancing both physical practice and meditation.

  - Role of Bandhas: Explore the key internal locks (bandhas) that support energy control in your practice:

    - Mula Bandha: The root lock that stabilizes the pelvic floor and grounds energy.

    - Uddiyana Bandha: The abdominal lock that lifts and energizes the body, enhancing breathing and concentration.

    - Jalandhara Bandha: The throat lock that regulates energy flow and promotes calmness.

    - Understand how these bandhas enhance strength, improve alignment, and help in transitioning between poses, creating a dynamic flow.

 

Module 3: Pranayama Techniques  

- Breath Control: Master core pranayama practices, understanding their significance in energy flow and the development of concentration.  

- Pranayama Practices: Techniques such as Ujjayi (Victorious Breath), Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing), and Bhastrika (Bellows Breath).

- Exploring Yoga Sutras: Dive deeper into the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, discussing concepts such as meditation, mindfulness, and non-attachment.

Module 5: Anatomy and Physiology for Yogis  

- Functional Anatomy: Study the human body's muscles and skeletal system concerning yoga practice, including the biomechanics of movement.

Module 6: Sanskrit Counting and Vinyasa

Situated on the bank of Ganges, Rishikesh is one of the holiest pilgrimage places in India. For thousands of years, it has been chosen retreat of saints, sages, and pilgrims who, after retiring from worldly involvement, pursued a solitary life of study, meditation, and austerity. BinduSar yoga ashram is situated in Rishikesh, near all the major pilgrimage places to Uttarakhand. Located as it is between the swiftly-flowing yet serene Ganges and the foothills of the Himalayas, it is an ideal and tranquil setting for spiritual practice.

We have an ayurvedic approach to our course and participants. Our course also includes learning about Ayurveda. Our food and eating rituals will be inspired by Ayurveda in the form of dosha-balancing meals. It includes three meals.

You can choose shared or single accommodation.

How to reach:

By Air from New delhi

Jolly Grant airport at Dehradun is the nearest airport to Rishikesh which is approximately 35 kilometers away. Popular carriers like Air India, Spice Jet and Jet Airways often have daily flights from New Delhi. Apart from Delhi, there is a flight from Lucknow to Dehradun as well. Once you reach at the airport, you can opt for regular taxi or bus service which is easily available from Dehradun to Rishikesh. The second nearest international airport for Rishikesh is in New Delhi which is well-connected with different cities across the globe.

 

By Train

The nearest railhead to Rishikesh is in Haridwar which is approximately 25 kilometres away. Haridwar, in turn, is linked to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Varanasi. Some of the popular trains are Shatabadi Express, Jan Shatabdi, AC Special Express and Mussoorie Express. For those making the journey to Rishikesh, it is advisable to take the train till Haridwar and then either take a bus or hire a taxi to Rishikesh. While the bus would take about 45 minutes, the taxi will take you to Rishikesh in about half an hour.

 

By Bus

Being a popular tourist destination, Rishikesh has a good network of buses connecting it with important places such as Haridwar, Dehradun and New Delhi. Buses depart in the morning and late evening from the Kashmere Gate ISBT, New Delhi for Rishikesh every day. You can choose from a regular, deluxe or a luxurious coach.

 

Once you arrive at Rishikesh bus station, find an auto rickshaw (tuk tuk) to take you to Laxman Jhula Bridge. An auto rickshaw ride will cost around 40  INR shared (Private 300 INR) from the bus station to Laxman Jhula Bridge. They will drop you near or around a path that has a sign leading you to Laxman Jhula. In case, you can also call us to send you a taxi for pick up to Dehradun airport to Haridwar railway station..
